This acrylic on canvas painting is part of a series set to be exhibited in Dallas, Texas at The Other Art Fair by Saatchi in May 2022. I have always wanted to (and one day will) create a life-sized bull. I recently started introducing a red background to my bull paintings. This is the first time I've painted a bull with another subject and I chose a matador. The interaction between man and animal brings so many different emotions to mind. It shows the true strength and resilience of the bull.
Bulls have always been known as the sign of strength, vitality and vigour. I grew up on a farm with a guard bull. We even had a name for it: Zumma. I have scary and fun memories of playing hide and seek with the gentle giant across an orchard on a hill. Sometimes, the things that you are scared of are also the things you are attracted to- the morbid curiosity. That is the story with the bull drawings. I identify with the bull for its energy and the rawness.
